Propolis is a bee product that can have many health benefits for dogs. In this article you will find out what propolis is, how it works, when you can use it and what you should bear in mind when doing so.

What is propolis?

Propolis is a resinous substance collected by bees from the plant kingdom and mixed with their saliva and wax. Bees use propolis to protect, disinfect and insulate their hive. Propolis contains many valuable ingredients such as flavonoids, phenolic acids, essential oils, minerals and vitamins.

How does propolis work for dogs?

Propolis has an antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal effect, i.e. it fights bacteria, viruses and fungi. It also has an anti-inflammatory, wound-healing and immune-boosting effect, which means it relieves pain, promotes skin regeneration and supports the body's defenses.

When can you use propolis for dogs?

Propolis can help with various illnesses and complaints in your dog. Here are a few examples:

  • Minor injuries, such as abrasions, scratches or bites: You can rub propolis ointment or tincture on the affected area to prevent infection and speed up healing.
  • Insect bites, such as from ticks, fleas or mosquitoes: You can treat the bite site with propolis ointment or tincture to relieve itching and prevent the transmission of pathogens. Propolis can, for example, prevent infection with borrelia (the pathogen that causes Lyme disease).
  • Skin diseases such as eczema, dermatitis or allergies: You can treat irritated skin with propolis ointment or spray to reduce inflammation and increase moisture.
  • Ear infections: You can put a few drops of propolis tincture in your dog's ear to kill the bacteria or fungus and reduce swelling. However, make sure that your dog's eardrum is intact.
  • Kennel cough: You can mix propolis capsules or powder into your dog's food to ward off viruses and boost the immune system. You can also add a homeopathic remedy to speed up recovery.

What do you need to bear in mind when using propolis for dogs?

Propolis is a natural and well-tolerated remedy for dogs. Nevertheless, there are a few points you should bear in mind:

  • Dosage: The dosage of propolis depends on the form (ointment, tincture, capsules, etc.), the concentration and the weight of your dog. If in doubt, you should follow the manufacturer's instructions or consult your vet.
  • Quality: Make sure that you buy high-quality propolis that is free from harmful substances and additives. Organic quality from a controlled source is best.
  • Allergy: Your dog may have an allergic reaction to propolis. This can manifest itself, for example, as a skin rash, itching or difficulty breathing. In this case, you should stop using it immediately and consult your vet.
  • Pregnancy: Propolis can stimulate the uterus and lead to contractions. You should therefore not use propolis on pregnant bitches.
  • Serious illnesses: Propolis can be a good addition to veterinary treatment, but it does not replace it. If your dog has a serious illness or the symptoms do not improve, you should always consult a vet.

Propolis is a versatile and effective home remedy for dogs that you can use for many ailments. It helps your dog to stay healthy and recover quickly. However, make sure that you dose propolis correctly, buy high-quality propolis and be aware of possible side effects.
