What is oat hulling bran?
Oat hulling bran consists of the outer layers of the oat grain, which are separated in the hulling mill. This includes the aleurone layer, the seed coat and the pericarp as well as a small proportion of oat hulls. Oat husk bran has a high crude fiber content of around 20 to 25 percent, a low crude protein content of around six to ten percent and a moderate starch content of around 16 percent. It also contains minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and potassium.
What are the benefits of oat bran for dogs?
Oat husk bran can be used as a supplementary feed for dogs with digestive problems or obesity. The crude fibers stimulate intestinal activity and ensure a longer feeling of satiety. They also bind water in the intestines and can therefore soften the stool and prevent constipation. The starch contained in oat bran is partially absorbable, i.e. it is not fully digested and can therefore stabilize blood sugar levels and reduce insulin secretion. This can be particularly beneficial for diabetic dogs.
What are the disadvantages of oat bran for dogs?
Oat bran is not a complete food for dogs and should only be fed in moderation. Too much oat bran can lead to flatulence, diarrhea or a lack of nutrients. In addition, allergies or intolerances can occur in some dogs, as oats are a type of grain that contains gluten. You should therefore always pay attention to your dog's reaction and consult a vet if necessary.
How can oat husk bran be fed to dogs?
Oat husk bran is available in various forms, e.g. as pellets, flakes or flour. It can be fed dry or soaked in water or broth. The amount depends on the dog's weight, age and activity level, but a guideline is about one tablespoon per ten kilograms of body weight per day. To avoid overfeeding, the oat bran should be introduced slowly and the total amount of food reduced accordingly.
