What is beeswax?
Beeswax is the secretion of four pairs of wax glands on the abdomen of bees. The bees chew the wax softly and use it to form the hexagonal cells of their honeycombs. In these cells they store honey and pollen or raise their brood. Wax consists mainly of fatty acid esters, hydrocarbons and alcohols. It has a yellowish color, which can vary depending on its origin and processing.
How is beeswax obtained?
Beeswax is extracted from the combs that are no longer needed for the honey harvest or the brood. The combs are melted and filtered to remove impurities. The purified wax can then be further processed or sold. Some beekeepers bleach the wax with hydrogen peroxide or sunlight to make it whiter. However, this affects the quality of the wax.
What are the benefits of beeswax for dogs?
Beeswax has many benefits for dogs, both as an ingredient in cosmetics and health products and as a material for toys and household items. Here are a few examples:
- Beeswax protects the skin from drying out and from infection. It forms a natural barrier against bacteria, fungi and dirt. It can therefore help with dry paws or minor injuries.
- Beeswax promotes the healing of inflammation and irritation. It has an antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and soothing effect. It can therefore be used for skin problems such as eczema or allergies.
- Beeswax gives the coat moisture and shine. It makes the hair supple and gives it a natural shine. It can therefore be used as a care product for the coat.
- Beeswax is a biodegradable substance that leaves no harmful residues. It is therefore environmentally friendly and safe for humans and animals. It can therefore be used as an alternative to plastic or kerosene for candles, cloths or toys.
What are the disadvantages of beeswax for dogs?
Beeswax also has some disadvantages for dogs that should be considered. Here are a few examples:
- Beeswax can cause allergic reactions. Some dogs are sensitive to certain components of the wax such as pollen or propolis. This can lead to itching, redness or swelling.
Beeswax can cause digestive problems. If dogs eat or chew too much wax, this can lead to constipation or diarrhea. This is especially true for pure wax without additives.
Beeswax can be expensive. As it is a natural product produced by bees, it is not always readily available or cheap. This applies in particular to high-quality wax from organic beekeeping.
