A representation of Dairy products

Dairy products are foods that are made from milk or milk components. These include butter, cheese, yogurt, quark and cream, for example. Many people love these products and eat them regularly. But what about dogs? Can they tolerate dairy products and are they healthy for them? In this article, you can find out more about the advantages and disadvantages of dairy products for dogs.

Benefits of dairy products for dogs

Dairy products can have several benefits for dogs when fed in moderation. Firstly, they contain valuable nutrients such as calcium, protein, fat, vitamins and minerals, which are important for bones, muscles, skin and the immune system. On the other hand, they can increase the taste and acceptance of the food, which can be particularly helpful for picky or sick dogs. In addition, some dairy products such as yoghurt or quark can have positive effects on the intestinal flora as they contain probiotic bacteria that promote digestion.

Disadvantages of dairy products for dogs

However, dairy products also have some disadvantages for dogs that you should be aware of. Firstly, they can lead to digestive problems such as diarrhea, bloating or vomiting if the dog is lactose intolerant. This means that he cannot break down lactose properly. Most adult dogs are lactose intolerant, while puppies can still produce the enzyme lactase, which is necessary for the digestion of lactose. On the other hand, dairy products can contribute to overweight or obesity if they are fed too often or in too large quantities. This is because they contain a lot of fat and calories, which can quickly accumulate. Being overweight or obese can in turn lead to various health problems such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease or joint problems.

As you can see, dairy products are not fundamentally bad or good for dogs. They have both advantages and disadvantages that you should weigh up. If you want to give your dog a piece of cheese or a spoonful of yogurt as a treat from time to time, this is usually not a problem. However, make sure that you only feed small amounts and that your dog is not lactose intolerant. If you are unsure how your dog reacts to dairy products, you can test him with a small portion first and observe whether he shows any symptoms. If your dog has no symptoms and his weight is within the normal range, you can give him some dairy every now and then. However, if your dog has digestive problems or is too fat, you should avoid dairy products or only feed them very rarely and in small quantities.
