Anethole is an organic compound that is responsible for the typical smell and taste of aniseed and fennel. It belongs to the phenylpropanoids, a group of aromatic compounds found in many plants. Anethole is poorly soluble in water but readily soluble in alcohol.

What is anethole

Anethole is used as a flavoring agent in perfumery and liqueur production. It also has a number of medicinal properties: it has an expectorant, antispasmodic and antibacterial effect. It can also promote milk production in breastfeeding mothers.

But how does anethole affect dogs? Is it safe or dangerous for them? Here are some pros and cons of anethole for your four-legged friend:

Pros

  • Anethole can help relieve bloating and stomach discomfort in dogs.

  • Anethole can act as a natural flea and tick repellent as it repels these parasites.

Disadvantages

  • Anetholecan trigger allergic reactions in dogs, such as skin rashes, itching or breathing difficulties.
  • Anetholecan cause liver damage in dogs if taken in high doses or over a long period of time.
  • Anethole can interact with some medications and influence their effect. For example, it can inhibit blood clotting or increase the effect of antidiabetic drugs.

As you can see, anethole has both positive and negative effects on dogs.

Anethole is an interesting substance with many properties. But as with everything, the dose makes the poison. So be careful and inform yourself well before you offer your dog something new.
