Acrylic acid ester
Acrylic acid esters are organic compounds that result from the reaction of acrylic acid with alcohols. They have the general formula CH2=CH-COOR, where R is an organo group. Acrylic acid esters are often used as starting materials for the production of plastics, paints and adhesives.
But what do acrylic acid esters have to do with dogs? And what are their advantages and disadvantages?
Acrylic acid esters and dogs
Acrylic acid esters are not toxic to dogs as long as they are not directly inhaled or swallowed. However, they can cause irritation on contact with the skin or mucous membranes. They can also trigger allergic reactions if the dog is sensitized.
So if you use products with acrylic acid esters, make sure that your dog does not have access to them. Store them out of his reach and avoid bringing him into contact with them. For example, if you are painting your walls with an acrylic paint, you should keep your dog out of the room or muzzle him until the paint has dried.
Advantages and disadvantages of acrylic esters
Acrylic esters have several advantages over other compounds. They dry quickly, can be diluted with water and have a long service life. They are also comparatively inexpensive and easy to tint.
However, they also have some disadvantages. They contain plastic and are often not very environmentally friendly. They are only moderately permeable and difficult to remove. In addition, they are usually mixed with biocides to prevent mold growth.
If you notice any signs of hypersensitivity or poisoning in your dog, you should see your vet immediately. We are not a substitute for a vet, but we try to be as accurate as possible. Every dog reacts differently and we recommend you get a second opinion or consult your vet if in doubt.
Stay healthy and take good care of your four-legged friend!😊
