Dancing Dobermann Disease
Dancing Doberman Disease (DDD) is a rare neurological disorder that primarily affects Dobermans, but can also affect other dog breeds. The cause of DDD is not yet known, but it is thought to be a genetic disorder that affects the nerves and muscles of the hind legs.
How do you recognize Dancing Dobermann Disease?
The first signs of DDD can appear as early as puppyhood, usually between 6 and 12 months of age. The typical symptoms are
- Difficulty standing up or lying down
- Trembling or twitching of the hind legs
- Uncoordinated or prancing movements of the hind legs
- Weakness or paralysis of the hind legs
- Sensitivity to pain or discomfort in the hip or knee joint region
Symptoms may worsen or stabilize over time. DDD does not affect the dog's intelligence, behavior or personality.
How is Dancing Doberman Disease diagnosed?
The diagnosis of DDD is based on the clinical examination of the dog, its breed, age and medical history. There is no specific test for DDD, but other conditions that may cause similar symptoms should be ruled out. These include:
- Herniated disc
- Degenerative myelopathy
- Hip dysplasia
- Infections or inflammation of the nervous system
- Tumors or injuries to the spinal cord
To rule out these diseases, various examinations can be carried out, such as
- Blood tests
- X-rays
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
- Electromyography (EMG)
- Cerebrospinal fluid examination
How is Dancing Dobermann Disease treated?
Unfortunately, there is no cure for DDD. Treatment is aimed at improving the dog's quality of life and relieving its pain. Treatment may vary depending on the severity of the symptoms, but may include the following:
- Physiotherapy or hydrotherapy to strengthen muscles and promote mobility
- Painkillers or anti-inflammatory medication to reduce discomfort
- Nutritional supplements or dietary changes to support nerve function
- Orthopaedic aids such as supports, splints or wheelchairs to facilitate mobility
How can Dancing Dobermann Disease be prevented?
As the exact cause of DDD is not yet known, there is no certain way to prevent it. However, you can reduce the risk by doing the following:
- Choose a responsible breeder who tests their dogs for genetic diseases and does not use affected animals for breeding
- Keep your dog healthy and fit by providing a balanced diet and regular exercise
- Take your dog to the vet regularly for routine check-ups and vaccinations
- Watch for signs of pain or discomfort in your dog and see a vet if necessary

The authors assume that a veterinarian should be consulted if an animal is ill and that medication should only be taken after consultation with a doctor or pharmacist. Only an individual examination can lead to a diagnosis and treatment decision.
