The American Staghound: A sighthound with a hunting instinct

History of the American Staghound

The American Staghound is the result of crossbreeding between Greyhounds and various Deerhound breeds. Breeding began in the 19th century to develop a dog with both the speed and agility of a Greyhound and the sturdiness and hunting abilities of a Deerhound. These dogs were mainly used to hunt coyotes and other game animals and were particularly popular in rural areas of the USA.

Who is the American Staghound suitable for?

The American Staghound is an excellent companion for active people and families who spend a lot of time outdoors. Due to its high energy level and love of running, it is particularly suitable for people who enjoy jogging, hiking or cycling. It is less suitable for people who live in small apartments without access to large open spaces.

Character and temperament

American Staghounds are known for their friendly and gentle nature. They are loyal, intelligent and good-natured. Despite their hunting origins, they are often very social and get along well with other dogs and pets when properly socialized. They have a strong hunting instinct and should therefore be walked in safe, fenced-in areas.

Appearance of the American Staghound

These dogs are tall and lean with an athletic build. Their coats can be short to medium length and vary in texture, often depending on the genetic mix of their ancestors. Colors can range from black, grey, brown to mixed shades. Their appearance is strongly reminiscent of their Greyhound and Deerhound ancestors.

Grooming the American Staghound

Grooming an American Staghound is relatively simple. Regular brushing is enough to keep the coat in good condition. Due to their size and activity, it is important to keep their claws short and pay attention to dental hygiene. Their ears should also be checked and cleaned regularly to prevent infections.

Health

The American Staghound is generally a robust and healthy breed. However, like all large dogs, they can be prone to certain health problems such as hip dysplasia and gastric torsion. Regular veterinary check-ups and a balanced diet will help to maintain their health.

Size and weight

American Staghounds are large dogs that can reach a shoulder height of 65 to 85 cm. Their weight varies between 30 and 50 kg, depending on gender and genetic influences.

Exercise requirements

This breed has a high exercise requirement and needs plenty of exercise. Large, fenced-in gardens or regular, long walks are ideal. They are not the best choice for city living unless the owner can provide them with sufficient exercise and mental stimulation.

Training recommendations

American Staghounds are intelligent and learn quickly, but can also be headstrong. Consistent and loving training is important. Positive reinforcement methods are most effective. Early socialization and basic obedience are essential to make them well integrated family members.

Interaction with children and other animals

American Staghounds are generally very good with children and can be loving and patient playmates. They usually get along well with other pets, especially if they grow up together. However, their hunting instincts should be taken into account when interacting with smaller animals.

Recognition by the FCI

The American Staghound is not currently recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI). However, it is recognized and registered by various national hunting and sighthound associations in the USA.
