Can drama in Italy: Are you allowed to press dog food cans for disposal?

Why crush cans at all?
Before we dive into the Italian rules, let's briefly clarify why many dog owners come up with the idea of crushing cans in the first place.
- Space saving: Especially if you feed a lot of cans or live in a small apartment, you want to pack the waste efficiently.
- Environmental awareness: Some believe that crushed cans are easier to recycle.
- Ease of transportation: Every centimetre counts in a motorhome or when travelling.
However, what is sometimes permitted or even recommended in Germany may look very different abroad.
Italian waste system: a brief overview
Italy has a differentiated waste separation system, which is regulated very differently from region to region. The most important fractions are
- Indifferenziato (residual waste)
- Organico (organic waste)
- Carta (paper)
- Vetro (glass)
- Plastica e Metalli (plastics and metals)
Dog food cans - usually made of aluminum or tinplate - belong in "Plastica e Metalli" or in a separate metal collection, depending on the region. And this is precisely the crux of the matter.
The problem with crushing cans
In Italy, crushing cans before disposal is undesirable or even prohibited in many regions. The reason is of a technical nature:
- Automated sorting systems: these systems recognize the shape of cans. If they are crushed, they may be incorrectly declared as other waste and not recycled correctly.
- Risk of confusion: A crushed can can look like plastic or, in the worst case, even end up in residual waste.
- Safety risk: Sharp-edged, crushed cans pose a risk of injury to waste workers.
This may seem like an exaggeration - but in Italy, waste separation is taken very seriously. In many municipalities, waste is even sorted and checked by individual. Incorrectly separated waste can lead to fines - even for tourists.
What specifically applies to dog food cans?
Pay attention to the material
First of all, you need to know what material the can is made of. As a rule, it is:
- Aluminum (light, silver, soft)
- Tinplate (magnetic, often darker)
Both materials are considered metal and must be collected separately. Look for the recycling symbol on the can - it often also tells you how to dispose of it.
Check regional regulations
Italy is not a uniform country when it comes to waste regulations. What is allowed in Milan may be completely different in Naples. Here are a few examples:
- Lombardy (e.g. Milan): Do not crush dog food cans, empty and clean in the metal container.
- South Tyrol: Clear guidelines - do not crush cans, remove label recommended.
- Tuscany (e.g. Florence): Cans may be slightly crushed, but not completely flattened.
You can usually find the information on the websites of the local comune (municipality) or from your accommodation provider.
Tourists beware: Waste separation is also important on vacation
If you are traveling with your dog in a motorhome or vacation home in Italy, you should find out about waste separation on site. In many areas there are:
- Collection schedules by day of the week
- Special bags or containers
- Waste stations with camera surveillance
Particularly in tourist regions such as South Tyrol or Lake Garda, there are strict controls. In some municipalities you even get a personal waste card with a barcode.
Practical tips for disposing of cans with dogs in Italy
- Rinse out the can: No leftovers, otherwise you will attract uninvited guests - especially in summer.
- Remove the label: Compulsory in some regions.
- Don't crush it completely: A slight deformation is usually okay, but don't produce flat slices.
- Understand the separation system: Ask the hotel, campsite or tourist office about the rules.
- Have a bag with you: Collect cans separately while traveling until you can dispose of them correctly.
What happens if you do it wrong?
Fines for incorrect waste separation can range from 25 to 500 euros - depending on the municipality and the severity of the offense. Even if you do it out of ignorance, this does not protect you from a fine.
What's more, Italians are very careful when it comes to sorting waste. Incorrectly disposed waste is often investigated - especially if it contains names or addresses (e.g. on delivery bills or packaging).
Dispose of with consideration and knowledge
Even if it is tempting to squeeze empty cans to save space, this is often not permitted in Italy and can have consequences. Especially as a dog owner who regularly uses canned food, you should familiarize yourself with the local disposal rules. This will help you avoid trouble, protect the environment and show respect for the country where you live or are on vacation.
